Drake’s Valley or Stout Cemetery

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The library records and the cemetery sign call this cemetery Drake’s Valley Cemetery; however, Google Maps has it labeled as Stout Cemetery.  The coordinates are 40.612546, -82.172536 This cemetery is in Washington Township right off of SR 39.  I saw it as I was traveling to Plum Run, which will be the next blog post.

There is a dirt drive coming up to the cemetery.  Someone cuts the grass in the cemetery, but the grass in the middle of the lane is quite long.  It was difficult to get my little Honda up there, but I did it.  I wouldn’t recommend visiting this cemetery in the winter.  There were many broken stones and some that were illegible.  You can find a listing of the stones that are available on Find a Grave.

You will see different spellings of this cemetery, but this is the spelling that I have seen most often.  It is a tiny cemetery on CR 235 just off the side of the road.  There is no room to park, and I would not advise parking near the road.  I parked at the end of a drive at a farm house nearby.  I tried to find someone, but no one answered the door.  I hope it was okay to park there : /  The cemetery is so small that it only took me a few minutes to snap all of the pics, and I was on my way.

The coordinates are 40.634090, -81.812627

The stone pictures can be found on Find a Grave.

Most of the stones are in bad shape and hard to read, and the land is a little unstable.  Here is a pic of a stone hiding in a bush.

Canaan Baptist Cemetery

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I took a wrong turn on the way to Slutz Cemetery and found the Canaan Baptist Cemetery. I’ll return to find the Slutz Cemetery another day.  After driving past several Amish farms on this warm day in May, I finally found the little cemetery next to Weaver’s store.  There isn’t a sign for the cemetery, but you can use the store sign as a marker.  The parking lot for the store is next to the cemetery, so you can park there and walk over.

The best way to get to the cemetery would be to take SR 241 to TR 605 to CR 235.  The store is near the crossroads of CR 235 and TR 606.  The coordinates are

40.646378, -81.812944

You can find the stone images on Find a Grave.

Salem Cemetery

KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA

The Salem Cemetery is at the edge of Holmes County and almost in Coshocton County.  It is near my house, so the drive was not long.  The road, however, was dusty and bumpy. Township Road 82 runs off of SR 60.  Travel east on TR 82 to TR 81.  These roads merge together.  Stay to the right, and travel on this road until it dead ends.  The road is a bit long. You may start to hear the song from Deliverance, but keep going; the dead end will be there.   Turn right on TR 129 and the cemetery will appear shortly on the left.  There is a small area to the right to park.  There is an electric fence around the cemetery, but you can walk up the fence on the right, and it is open on the back.  You can get in there.

The coordinates of this cemetery are 40.45000, -81.94810

Elliott Cemetery

Elliott CemeteryThe Elliott Cemetery is on township road 112 in Mechanic Township.  The coordinates are 40.480433, -81.878400  There is no place to park here.  You will have to park at the side of the road, but make sure you are completely off the road and can be seen from both sides.  Several trucks went by while I was there, and my car would have been hit if I wasn’t in a good line of sight and COMPLETELY off the road.

This is a relatively small cemetery, so you won’t have to hunt long to find the grave you need.  There are some stones that are broken and others leaning.  You can see the pictures of the stones on Findagrave.com

Remnants of a small, iron fence remain.  I love these old fences in the graveyards.  Although they are often falling down and in ill-repair, I think they add to the character of the cemeteries.  Here are some pics of the fence.
