Growing Readers Storytime – ages 2 – 5
Growing Readers Storytime is scheduled for Fridays @ 10:30 am beginning January 7th and runs through April 29th, 2022 at our Central Library location in Millersburg. Children and their parents or caretakers will enjoy stories, songs, rhymes, and more! Registration is not required. Contact the Children’s Department at 330-674-5972, ext. 211 for more information.
Story Celebrations – ages 2 – 5
Story Celebrations is scheduled for Wednesdays @ 10:30 am beginning January 5th and runs through April 27th, 2022 at our East Branch location in Walnut Creek. Children and their parents or caretakers will enjoy stories, songs, rhymes, and more! Registration is not required.
What is Story Time ?
Preschoolers, toddlers and their caregivers are invited to visit the library to enjoy stories, crafts, activities and songs.
The Central Library offers story times on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 11 am. In the Fall, programs run September through mid-November. Winter-Spring story times begin in mid-January and run through the month of April.
Why is story time important?
Story times give your child the tools she/he needs to be ready to read when the time comes. Our story time programs incorporate the following six pre-reading skills set out by Every Child Ready to Read.
Narrative Skills – Being able to describe things and events and tell stories.
In Story Time:
•Children are asked to retell a story or relate in conversation things they have experienced
•Children are asked to predict what might happen next
Phonological Awareness – Being able to hear and play with the smaller sounds in words.
In Story Time:
• Children recite Nursery rhymes
•Children sing using rhythm and rhyme
Vocabulary – Knowing the name of things.
In Story Time:
• Children are ask if they recognize familiar objects
• Children are introduced to words that may not be used in common everyday conversation
Letter Knowledge – Knowing letter are different from each other, knowing their names and sounds and recognizing letters everywhere.
In Story Time:
• Children recite the alphabet by pointing at each letter
• Children are asked if they see a particular letter on a page, poster or in a picture
Print Awareness – Noticing print, knowing how to handle a book and knowing how to follow the words on a page.
In Story Time:
• Children are encouraged to hold books and turn the pages
Print Motivation – Being interested in and enjoying books.
In Story Time:
• We are optimistic that everything we do with books in storytime is encouraging children to be interested in and love books.
