Ohio Department of Education
The Ohio Department of Education’s Home Schooling page provides guidelines and information on Ohio’s requirements for parents/guardians who want to homeschool their children. Click here for more information.

National Home School Association (NHSA)
The NHSA is the national headquarters for home schooling in America. The NHSA provides comprehensive support, programs, activities, and resources to the nationwide community of homeschoolers. (from their website). Click here for more information.
Educator Library Card
Parents or guardians who are homeschooling their children can apply for a Holmes County District Public Library educator’s card. Most items borrowed are for an 8 week loan period. Personal items cannot be checked out on an educator card. The library is part of a network of over 95 libraries that share materials. Educator cards can be issued to patrons whose current HCDPL account is in good standing.
Parent-Teacher Collection
The Parent/Teacher collection is located at the beginning of the children’s nonfiction section. This collection includes resources on homeschooling and educating children, behavior and growth, etc.
Children's Nonfiction Collection
The children’s nonfiction collection contains a wide-variety of books that can assist with a number of educational areas.
- 400s – Language and Language Arts
- 500s – Sciences, animals, habitats
- 600s – Health, transportation, farming, domestic animals, & cooking
- 700s – Art, architecture, sports, outdoors.
- 800s – Poetry
- 900s – Geography, countries, states, history.
Beginning (EZ) Readers
Beginning Readers are books specifically written to aid children who are learning to read. Our collection is color-coded as a guide to help parents/guardians choose books that match their child’s reading level.
Picture Books
Our picture book collection is themed by subject or interest to help make browsing easier.
Transitional Readers
Located in the Children’s Chapter Book section is a small collection of transitional readers for those ready to try chapter books. These are identified by the round green sticker on the spine.
Chapter Books
Our chapter book collection is aimed for 1st through 6th grade readers and covers genres such as history, science fiction, fantasy, classics and realistic fiction.
Juvenile Biographies
From Daniel Boone to the current pop culture figures, juvenile biographies cover it all. If we don’t have it, one of the 95 libraries we share materials with probably does!
Middle Grade Fiction
We have a small, middle grade section which covers genres for 5th—8th grade readers.
Magazines
A variety of magazines are available to check out. Stop by the Children’s Department at the Central Library to check it out!

Thanks to the State Library of Ohio, OPLIN and your own, Holmes County District Public Library, many high quality resources are available at your fingertips at no cost to you!
