Our current story walk is “I Can Read with My Eyes Shut” by Dr. Seuss
In April 2021, the Holmes County District Public Library’s Children’s Department received $4,999.99 for the Walk with Me: A Community Adventure in Literacy StoryWalk® project thanks to a grant from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and awarded by the State Library of Ohio. Additional funding for the project was provided by the Friends of the Holmes County Library.
A StoryWalk® is an innovative way for children (and adults) to enjoy reading and the outdoors. Laminated pages of a children’s picture book are placed along a path where participants can read the story by walking to each page along the path. Interactive activities are sometimes included to make for a fun combination of reading and exercise.
The StoryWalk® concept was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT, and has developed with the help of Rachel Senechal, formerly of the Kellogg-Hubbard Library.
With the approval of the Village of Millersburg Council Members and help from the Village of Millersburg Maintenance Department, metal frames for holding the storybook pages were installed along the paved path at Deer Run Park which is located next to the library.
Contributions from the Friends of the Holmes County Library also assisted in the completion of this project.
The StoryWalk® can be accessed 7 days a week during daylight hours.
