Mechanic Township was established in 1819 and drew its many settlers because of the abundance of natural water power created by the Doughty Creek. The township derived its name due to the various settlers whose livelihoods were mechanical in nature. Blacksmiths, mills and a tannery were established in this area. The township includes the settlements of Saltillo, Becks Mills and Troyer’s Hollow.
You can read more about the history of Mechanic Township in the book Holmes County to 1985, pages 188-190.
