General Library FAQ
How do I get a library card?
Your library card must be presented to borrow library materials and access the Internet. It may be used at all Holmes County District Public Library locations. Notify the library immediately if you card is lost or stolen, or if you change your address.
How to get a library card
Apply in person at the library you use most often. Fill out an Application Form.
A parent or guardian should register in person for a minor (anyone under age 18).
Identification Required
Adult applicants and adults who are responsible for minors must present an acceptable form of identification to verify address.
Restrictions
The library reserves the right not to issue a library card to anyone who cannot provide identification and to restrict the borrowing privileges of any person who has overdue materials and /or accumulated fines and charges.
How can I change how I receive hold notifications or other library notifications?
Patrons have several options for how to receive notifications that items placed on hold are available. These options are set when a patron signs up for a library card. They can be changed at any time by calling the Central Library at 330-674-5972.
- By email. We need to have a valid email address on file for your library card in order to use this option (if you already get your notices via email, your service will not change). Email notices are sent out automatically at the end of each business day.
- By SMS text messaging. This requires a mobile device that can receive text messages. Standard data rates may apply. If you have issues with receiving text messaging, especially on a pre-paid phone, please check our SMS Troubleshooting page.
- By phone call. If we do not have an email address on file for your library card account, a staff member will call the phone number listed in your account information between the hours of 9:00am and 8:00pm. Due to the number of items placed on hold each day, we will only be able to call ONCE. We will leave a voice mail message if possible, stating that an item or items are waiting for pickup at a specific location and for how long those items will be held for pickup. No specific item information will be shared, and no other library business will be conducted as part of this process.
Remember, you can view your holds online using the online catalog’s “My Account” features. The online catalog can be accessed here: https://ohio.ent.sirsi.net/client/en_US/hco/. If you do not have computer access, you may also phone the library to inquire about the status of your items on hold. Overdue notices will be sent via email, SMS (text), or standard mail if neither email nor SMS are available.[/ms_tab] Patrons can now receive automatic notifications for upcoming library programs and events. How do I check out Holds?
For DVDs and Blu Rays, ask a staff member to retrieve your holds. For everything else, patrons can pick up holds themselves from our holds shelves. These are located close to our self checkout. Ask a staff member if you cannot find them.
Items on hold will be filed according to a system designed to protect patron privacy. To find your holds, simply look for the first letter of your last name, followed by the last four digits in your library card number.
For Example:
Patron Name: Avid Reader
Patron Card Number: 21365000123456
Hold Code: R3456

How do I use a public computer at the library?
Patrons with a library card may use any available computer by signing on for a session. At an available computer, simply move the mouse or touch any key on the keyboard, then click on the button that says “log in as patron”. You will be prompted for your library card number and PIN. Your PIN is usually the last 4 digits of your phone number. Once your information has been entered, press the “Log In” button. You will be presented with our terms of use. Acceptance of the terms of use is required to use our public computers. Declining will take you back to the log on page. Patrons without a library card may ask library staff for a guest pass. This guest pass is good for two one-hour long public computer sessions, and expires after 24 hours. Minors under the age of 18 without a library card must have a parent/guardian present to request a guest pass. For more information please click here for our full public computer policy.
How do I print from a public computer at the library?
Cost for printing is as follows:
- Black and White – $0.15 per page
- Color – $0.25 per page
To print in black and white, select the “B & W” printer when sending the print job. For color prints, select the “Color” printer. Follow the on-screen prompts to send the print job. For the User ID, you may use your first name or your library card number. It is recommended that you do not log off the computer until you have your printed pages in hand and are sure that they look how you expected. Please be aware that different web pages, email clients, and applications all have different ways of printing. It is highly recommended that you use the “print preview” option whenever available to see how your print job will look on paper before sending it. Refunds will not be issued for print jobs that do not look as expected due to user error / negligence.
Can I print from my own device?
Wireless printing is available on mobile devices that support it. To print from a mobile device, you will need to connect wirelessly to our Central Library printer. Ask a library staff member at the help desk for the password to connect. Note that you will not be able to use the internet while wirelessly connected to our printer. If the documents you need are in your email or an online app, download them to your device before connecting to our printer. Although library staff are available to assist patrons with wireless printing, not every device is compatible.
Do the public computers store any personal data that I enter?
No. Each time a public computer session is ended, the computer is automatically wiped clean of any new data that was entered during the previous use. This includes stored files and folders, internet browser saved information / history, and any computer settings that you change. This also helps to protect against viruses and other types of malware on our public computers. Should your computer become infected, simply notify staff, end your current public computer session, and start a new session on a different available public computer. Once the computer finishes restarting, it will be good as new. Please note that submitting personal data to websites and/or online forms goes beyond the control of the library.
Are there limits on how much I can use the public computers?
The library limits patrons to two 1 hour long sessions per day. If no one is waiting for a computer, each session may be extended by up to 15 minutes. After those two sessions are done, library staff may grant additional uses at their discretion if there are plenty of computers available. If you are taking an online test or need longer sessions for something like academic research, let a library staff member know, and we can make special arrangements. There are no limits on public wireless use.
How do I connect to the library wireless?
Wireless internet is available at both our Central Library and East Branch Locations. To connect, open your devices settings and find the Wireless settings. If you are within range of our wireless network, you will see a network called “Library Wireless”. Select this and connect to it. Once your device is connected, open up an internet browser. You should be automatically redirected to our splash authentication page. To use our wireless network, you must agree to our Terms of Use by clicking on the “Proceed to Internet” button. If the authentication page does not appear automatically, try going to www.google.com. This should prompt your device to load the authentication page.
What applications are available on the library public computers?
Our library public computers currently run on Windows 10 and have all the standard applications that come with Windows 10. They also have Microsoft Office Suite 2016 which includes the following programs:
- Word
- Excel
