Fridays, June 8th, 15th and 22nd

11:00 am -1:00 pm

Subjects covered will be:

• basic mouse and keyboard use

• an overview of computer hardware and software

• navigation and understanding of the Windows 7 Operating System

• basic Internet browser and search engine use

• option to sign up for e-mail.

Classes are free, but space is limited

Participants must be able to attend all 3 classes

Teens can “Own the Night”, this year’s Summer Reading Program theme. Read and earn prizes! A kick-off party will take place Friday, June 1st from 4:30-8:30 pm at the Central Library with “Mystery Dinner Party; Barbecue with a Vampire”. Registration is required for this event. The Teen Summer Reading Program will begin June 4th and run through July 14th. Registration for summer reading will be May 25 through May 31st. In addition, the Central Ohio Paranormal Research Group will visit the Central Library on June 15th. The program begins at 5:00 pm with a pizza supper. Parents are welcome to join their teens for this exciting event. Registration is required. A Teen lock in will conclude the summer reading festivities. Calling all dreamers! Explore the night this summer as the Central and East Branch Libraries present “Dream Big – READ!” during our summer reading program. Children ages 2-12 can read or listen to books to earn incentives. Each location will host weekly programs which may feature a ventriloquist, nocturnal animals, space, songs, skits story times and more! The “Dream Big – READ!” Summer Reading Program begins June 4th and runs through July 14th. June 11 @ 11 am – Dinosaur Dreams Storytime – Kids ages 2-Kindergarten will have fun listening to stories, singing songs and making crafts related to this year’s summer reading program theme. Make & Take Crafts for school-age children. Registration is required.

June 18 @ 11 am – Night Shivers Storytime – Kids ages 2-Kindergarten will have fun listening to stories, singing songs and making crafts related to this year’s summer reading program theme. Make & Take Crafts for school-age children. Registration is required.

June 25 @ 11 am – A Pirate’s Life for Me – Kids ages 2-Kindergarten will have fun listening to stories, singing songs and making crafts related to this year’s summer reading program theme.  Make & Take Crafts for school-age children. Registration is required.

July 2 @ 11 am – Batty About Bats – Kids ages 2-Kindergarten will have fun listening to stories, singing songs and making crafts related to this year’s summer reading program theme. Make & Take Crafts for school-age children. Registration is required.

July 9 @ 11 am – Dream Big with Marty and Michele! Join us as we wrap up summer reading with songs, skits and more! Family program.

June 20 @ 11 am – Dream Big with Musical Mark. Join us for music, laughter, sing-a-longs and interactive participation based on nocturnal animals. Family program

June 27 @ 11 am – The Wilderness Center, Space Day Program. Investigate the eight planets in the solar system through this hands-on interactive program. Participants will visit hands-on stations and explore planetary wonders. Aimed for school-aged children. Younger children will need to be accompanied by an adult.

July 3 @ 11 am – 1 pm. Make and Take Crafts. Stop by the Central Library between 11 am and 1 pm for some make and take crafts while supplies last.

July 11 @ 11 am – Dream Big with Marty and Michele! Join us as we wrap up summer reading with songs, skits and more! Family program

I was looking through the February 18, 1943 issue of the Farmer Hub and found this article.  Frances Guscott, the Holmes County Librarian at the time, was strongly urging (that’s as forceful as a librarian gets) the Holmes County residents to please donate books from their libraries to be sent to the troops.  I wonder if it worked.

Grave Adventures Spring Cemetery Tour

Saturday, May 12^th beginning at 11:45 am

Join the Holmes County Library Ladies on their second tour of some of Holmes County’s most interesting cemeteries. The Spring Tour will include lunch at Deer Run Park and a visit to Oak Hill Cemetery where participants will attend the historic dedication of the Adena Burial Mound. After the ceremony, it’s off to explore cemeteries in Glenmont, Nashville and Saltillo where we will learn the art of gravestone rubbing, tombstone symbolism and the legend of the Death Angel.

Cost is $25 per person which includes lunch and the tour

Three journalists from Saltillo, Mexico came to do research about the Holmes County Saltillo.  They are working on a documentary about all of the Saltillos in the United States.  When I asked them what Saltillo meant, they said that there was no definitive meaning, but illo is placed at the end of a word to mean small.  They said that Saltillo would mean small jump or spring.  The picture in this post shows a little spring running through the land next to the soldiers and monks.  You can learn more about Saltillo, Ohio on pages 193-195 of Holmes County Historical Sketches by Brooks Harris.

One-on-One eReader Help Sessions

The Holmes County Library is now offering one-on-one help for those with ereader devices. Sessions will be up to 30 minutes in length showing patrons how to checkout and download library ebooks and other digital media.

Participants must have a valid Holmes County District Public Library card with an account in good standing.
