Welcome Cemetery

The center of activity for the community of Welcome was the Welcome General Store where friends would visit, purchase needed grocery items or catch up on the gossip of the day. At one time the mail was delivered to the store, sorted and put into boxes. During the evening, people would stop by to pick up their mail and possibly be treated by a song from Ike Mackey. The store is no longer in existence, but past owners were Joe Mackey, Tom Bell, Charles Patterson, Len Bird, Ed and Bertha Anderson, Tim Burgett and Stella Smith.

In 1833, the Welcome Church was first organized on the Underhill Farm. Twelve people meet under the beech tree’s near the Underhill house. For 11 years members of the congregation met in homes until a church building was built in 1844. The first church was located next to the Welcome Cemetery. Due to growth, a second church was built in 1874 and located across the road from the cemetery.
