Welcome to the first episode of the Grave Adventures of the Holmes County Library Ladies! Sit back, relax and enjoy the fun as the ladies take you on a virtual tour of Oak Hill Cemetery in Millersburg, Ohio. The genealogy enthusiast will find the important information provided helpful in making their visit a prosperous one filled the many genealogical gleanings. Historical accounts of some of Millersburg’s prominent citizens are sure to please any history buff. Turn up the volume (we had a little trouble with the wind), break out the popcorn and enjoy Part 1 of Oak Hill Cemetery! Looking for more Grave Adventures, visit the Library’s YouTube Channel.
What an interesting and original way to learn about local history. Love the intro and transitions – reminiscent of the Mystery series on PBS. Will future installments follow the same format but from other cemetaries around the county, or will you revisit other sites at Oak Hill?
Thanks for your comment, Chris. We have two more installments of Oak Hill that have been filmed and are currently being edited. The release should come sometime in the next two weeks. Our plans call for highlighting a major cemetery from each township in Holmes County and then taking requests from viewers for other cemeteries of interest. Our format (intro and transitions) will likely stay the same. However, in addition to focusing on prominent HC citizens, we hope to incorporate items such as the proper technique for doing a grave stone rubbing, art of the tombstone, and cemetery safety to just name a few into our episodes. We are also launching a Holmes County Cemeteries site which will provide an array of information on all things cemetery! Stay tuned!
This was great. The Library Ladies sure got into it. Such enthusiasm. Beautiful cemetery. I hope they return on a mild Spring day when the grass is green and the wind is not blowing. Really enjoyed this!!
Great video! I love to learn about local history, very interesting to me! Great Job!
Thank you, Rachael! The Holmes County Library Ladies had a lot of fun making the videos. Our goal is to provide digital access to local cemeteries for those who are unable to visit Holmes County. You may want to visit the Holmes County Cemeteries website at http://www.holmeslibrary.org/cemeteries for more videos and other cemetery information. ~Michele
Thank you for sharing the information about my ancestor James A. Estill. I have visited his gravesite many times over the years and wrote a short biography about him as an assignment for a history class at Wooster back in 1979. There are several generations of additional James Estills who are namesakes for James A. My father, James H. (also an attorney and also buried further down the hill at Oak Hill Cemetery) is one. My dad’s father Elmo M. Estill (also a lawyer and also buried at Oak Hill) had a brother James Estill who was also a lawyer in Oklahoma City, OK. A law firm still exists today that bears his name. He is buried somewhere in Oklahoma City although I have not researched this.
Susan,
Thank you so much for sharing this information about your family. It is always good to know a little more about the founding families of Holmes County.
Great job ladies!!
Thank you, Debbie! We had lots of fun filming Oak Hill Cemetery!
